Marriott Rolls Out Automated Complimentary Upgrades

imageBig tech meets elite perks—Marriott is now using automation to assign complimentary room upgrades before guests even check in. I know this was news last month, but it’s worth mentioning.

For years, getting a complimentary upgrade at Marriott could be tricky and sometimes awkward. During my stays while on assignment, I often had to ask repeatedly throughout my stay(I often had month long stays), sometimes even getting routed to the manager just to see if an upgrade was possible. The interaction could feel tense or uncertain, and results were far from guaranteed.

Now, Marriott is officially rolling out a new automated system that evaluates elite members' upgrade eligibility in advance of their arrival. This aims to make the process fairer, faster, and more consistent across properties—removing much of the awkward back-and-forth and making upgrades smoother, more seamless, and less dependent on front desk negotiations.

🧠 How the Automated Upgrade System Works

  • Activation Time: The system begins processing upgrades at 3 PM local time the day before check-in.

  • Eligibility: Gold Elite members and higher are prioritized based on tier level, spending history, and arrival preferences.

  • Upgrade Process: The system scans available elite upgrade inventory at participating hotels and automatically matches eligible reservations with available upgraded rooms. If an upgrade is available, members receive a notification through the Marriott Bonvoy app.

  • Final Assignment: The process isn’t completely automated—after the system does its matching, hotel staff must still assign the available upgraded rooms and confirm each one.

⚠️ Important Considerations

  • No Guarantee: Unfortunately, you still can’t guarantee an upgrade. There are often more elite members than there are available rooms.

  • Best Available Room Policy: Marriott has removed the "best available room" guarantee for elite members. Upgrades are now subject to availability and may not include suites or premium rooms.

  • Hotel Discretion: Hotels still determine which rooms are available for upgrades, and some properties may limit the rooms included in the upgrade pool.

  • Alternative Option: If you’d rather not roll the dice, you can try redeeming a Nightly Upgrade Award. These awards allow you to confirm an upgrade a little sooner, but your request won’t be considered until at most five days before check-in. Plus, Nightly Upgrade Awards are only redeemable at select brands.

📱 What This Means for You

  • Advance Notification: You’ll know if you've been upgraded before you even check in, allowing for better trip planning.

  • Consistency: The system aims to provide a more consistent experience across Marriott properties, reducing reliance on front desk staff discretion.

  • Still Uncertainty: Despite automation, upgrades are still subject to availability and hotel policies.

Marriott's new automated upgrade system represents a significant shift in how elite members receive room upgrades, moving from a manual, discretionary process to an algorithm-driven approach.

For frequent travelers like me, it promises a more seamless experience without the awkward interactions and repeated requests that were once part of the upgrade process. While it offers benefits in terms of consistency and transparency, the lack of guarantees and continued hotel discretion means some uncertainty will remain.
