All great world building begins with great research.
What is Zero to Hero? It's the working title for the book I'm currently working on in between working on the R.I.S.E. Series. It's actually the superhero dystopia that I've mentioned a few posts back.
It is in the earliest of early stages of development. So far I literally just have a vague idea of the plot, the main character, and vague ideas of 3 side characters. And that means I get to take you along in the process as I create this book.
And the latest development is that I had a great world building session last night.
The most notable development: I've decided that this city is centered around mining. Or, at least, it was. (It is a dystopia after all ✨️.) And I've decided that they mined a special metal. They were told that that this special ore vein had run out. However, those in control just said that to use it all for their evil purposes rather than help the city.
How did I come to all of this? First, I did research on types of mines, what they mine, and classification and uses of these natural minerals and ores. Then, I did research on how different mines look. And then I researched the refining process on how a natural resource gets turned into practical things like sheet metal. Turns out, it's a huge process. And finally, I looked up what the towns nearby do to gain income in different ways once the mine was no longer fruitful.
Yeah, that sounds like a lot when put into words. In actuality, it probably took me 45 minutes lol. But now I have a good foundation to build the world from.
And as far as this special metal they are mining goes, I don't have a name for it yet (maybe something with the word 'hero' in it). But the whole city will be made with it, and the city will be named after it.

from a bird's eye view, the city is shaped like a circle, all leading towards the center of it all: the entrance to the mine.
The mine entrance is a circle and it is very wide. No one dares to go inside. No one even steps beyond the fence around this abandoned place. But in the dead of night, when you get too close, you can hear the echos of miners past calling out from the depths of the pit. (Truly, it's just actual miners continuing to harvest the metal ore for the antagonist.)
