A lot of people know me as a hairstylist.
What many DON'T know is that before I ever stood behind a salon chair, I spent years in and out of jail and prison.
I walked into jail at 18 years old.
I was still trying to figure out who I was, and I found myself living in a place where violence, corruption, fear, and abuse could become a part of my every day life.
Some of what I witnessed still stays with me...
When I came home after my last sentence, I promised myself I'd never go back.
I got sober...
I built a career...
I built a family...
I started over.
Today, I still love what I do. I still spend my days taking care of senior clients and listening to the incredible stories they've collected over a lifetime.
But when I get home...
I start researching.
Most people only see the finished Facebook post.
They don't see the hours spent reading lawsuits, court records, policies, and investigative reports. They don't see me comparing sources, looking for missing pieces, or trying to make sure I have the facts before I share them.
People have asked me why I spend so much time doing this... and the answer is simple.
I know EXACTLY what it feels like when nobody is paying attention to what happens to you because you made a bad decision. Like a whole life is defined by that poor choice.
I also know there are incredible correctional officers who do their jobs with integrity every day...
This isn't about them.
It's about accountability.
It's about making sure abuse doesn't stay hidden simply because it happens behind prison walls.
