Sometimes the best parts of a ride are the unplanned detours. On a recent trip down to Wellington, I needed a quick break from the highway, so I decided to duck off near Ongaonga and explore a few backroads running along the foot of the Ruahine Ranges.
The route took me down Blackburn Road and Hardy Road, which provided some incredible views across the farmland to the snow dusted peaks above. Wanting to push a little further, I followed North Block Road right up to the Sunrise Track carpark. A few years ago I did the short walk from here into Triple X Hut, but with time against me on this trip, the carpark served as the perfect turnaround spot before hopping back on the main road.
It was only a short detour, but it was a welcome escape from the highway traffic and a reminder of how many scenic backroads are hiding just off the main routes.
