Exploring Whaanga Road and the Cliffside Lookout at Te Toto Gorge

Oct 11, 2026

This cross country trip over to Raglan turned into quite the adventure. My previous ride was a bit short, so I decided to brave the current petrol prices and head all the way across to the west coast to explore some classic coastal backroads and dramatic landscapes.

The route included a stop at Aotea township to check out the harbour views and the massive sand dunes across the water, before jumping onto the gravel stretch along Whaanga Road. The absolute highlight was visiting the Te Toto Gorge Lookout, where the viewing platform hangs directly over a 100-meter drop down to the ocean. I actually had a heart in mouth moment when my drone slid right to the very edge of the cliff. As someone who is definitely not a fan of heights, retrieving it was an experience I won't forget anytime soon.

After taking in the coast at Manu Bay and stopping in Raglan for a bite to eat, I made my way back via the historic Arapuni Dam and swingbridge to wrap up the journey.
