2023 Re-Draft - WR Concerns

So I’ve been doing my yearly run of Mock Drafts (all 12-teamers) and have come to a startling realization. In my opinion, the depth at WR this season isn’t where it’s been in recent years. Traditionally, in 12-team non-Superflex PPR leagues, I’d recommend having at least 2 solid WRs by the end of Round 7 because great values at WR could be had in Rounds 8 and 9. I’m talking about guys that have a solid floor and the ability to stand out in any given week. This year, I am afraid that is just not the case.

In the Mock Drafts I have done this season, I’ve been really disappointed in the guys that are sitting there. Most have a nice little name value but any upside is severely limited by either recent injury history, too many mouths to feed, or an offense that traditionally struggles to support a solid WR3 or even a solid WR2. These are the players I am seeing being taken in Rounds 8, 9 and 10:

  • Kadarius Toney

  • Michael Thomas

  • Brandin Cooks

  • Juju Smith-Schuster

  • Zay Flowers

  • Quentin Johnston

  • Gabe Davis

  • Courtland Sutton

  • Rashod Bateman

  • Elijah Moore

  • Odell Beckham

  • Jameson Williams

  • Allen Lazard

This list does nothing to excite me. Do I really want to count on any of these guys to be my WR3??? Certainly NOT. In fact, if I had to say anything nice about any of them, my first thought is the image of Jim Carrey saying “So you’re saying there’s a chance…”.

If you’ve ever read anything I have put out, my primary objective is always to eliminate as much risk as possible. I think this year, I’m looking to adjust my recommended draft strategy to make sure I get my hands on 3 solid WRs by the end of Round 7. I can handle any of the above guys as my WR4 but excuse me if I throw up in my mouth a little at the thought of one having to replace my WR2 due to an injury!

Thats all for this first edition of my yearly Mock Draft takeaways! If you’ve found this helpful or appreciate my insight, please consider “Buying Me a Coffee” by donating. I appreciate anything and everything! Much love to you all whether you donate or not!

Laterz!
