I asked the barber for a light trim.
He gave me an existential crisis.Said my hairline was "reconsidering its position."
Said my crown was now "open-plan living."
Said he used to cut my hair — now he's just negotiating with what's left.And somewhere between his architectural commentary and the mirror's brutal honesty, I realized something:
We spend years fighting our own blueprints,
measuring self-worth in millimetres of surrender,
as if every follicle carried our value.But what if loss isn't failure?
What if it's just renovation?Nature saying: let's open up this space.
Less insulation up top, more room for light to get in.
Fewer things to maintain, more energy for what matters.The barber finished his work.
I paid him for the honesty.
And walked out feeling oddly... aerodynamic.Ready for Cape Town's winter winds,
for the south easter that no longer has much to grab onto.Sometimes the trim you didn’t ask for
teaches you that freedom weighs less than you thought —
and catches less wind too.
