Emotional Regulation with ADHD - Timing or Willpower?

Feb 03, 2026

I’ve been thinking a lot about emotional regulation with ADHD lately — not as a willpower problem, but as a timing one.

So much advice assumes that if we just try harder or calm down faster, regulation will follow. But for many ADHD nervous systems, by the time emotions feel obvious, the body is already overwhelmed. Support arrives late — and then we blame ourselves when it doesn’t work.

I wrote a new piece exploring this from a nervous-system perspective: noticing earlier, responding sooner, and offering support before overwhelm tips into survival mode. It covers somatic awareness, subtle overwhelm, freeze around transitions, and how emotional sensitivity often reflects load rather than weakness.

If you’re here supporting this work — thank you. It genuinely helps me keep writing in a slower, more thoughtful way 🤍
