Відомості The Bread Bin
The Bread Bin is a Free Community bakery.
The bakery products are saved from supermarkets where they would have been thrown out as waste, and the carbon footprint would rise. The Bread Bin provides a way for the bakery to be distributed into local communities, which in turn reduces the carbon footprint.
Bread is one of the most commonly wasted food items in the UK. It is estimated that approximately 900,000 tonnes of bread are wasted each year, both at the production and consumer levels. That is the equivalent of 24 million slices per day.
UK supermarkets throw away around 240,000 tonnes of food each year, which is the equivalent of 190 million meals: Cost: Supermarkets spend around £1 billion each year on food waste, with Only 9% of food waste from supermarkets being donated to charities. The main cause of food waste in supermarkets is expired food past its sell-by date, but damaged stock also contributes. Around 40% of food waste is "perfectly rescuable”.
As much as The Bread Bin can benefit those in need of food assistance, it is also simply an avenue for the surplus to be saved and used, rather than going to waste.
There's currently 6 Bread Bin locations across BCP which receive weekly deliveries.
