When did we allow supermarkets to pen us in like sheep?

At what point did we allow supermarkets to install barriers at the entrances to close us into the store trying to force us to walk through the store. They think if we have to walk around the shop we will buy something, but I'm guessing if you've gone to a shop or supermarket you are looking to buy something or at least looking to see if you want to buy something. They claim it's to prevent shoplifting, so by that theory shoplifting has been solved but yet it's still on the rise. That can't be the real reason because most stores have an exit barrier right next to the entrance barrier which anyone can use, how is that stopping any shoplifting? Granted some stores you have scan your receipt before the barrier lets you out and that's more to the point of the barriers. They have done some research and no doubt that shows people spend 3.7% more with supermarkets with barriers then without barriers.

I've been told some people have started putting stickers on the barriers to make them look more colourful, stickers from Pokémon or care bares or my little pony for example. I couldn't condone any such practice because I'm sure that will be classed as criminal damage and would take staff ages to remove all the stickers.
