Having been in management for a couple of decades, you learn how to juggle quite a few things, then delegate tasks and follow up. But what if you're a one man wrecking crew? There is no one to delegate tasks to, and there is no one to follow up with, which means if something gets missed, you're the one that missed it, and you might not catch it until later.
The good thing about my current situation is there is still a learning curve and a very low volume of 'tasks', etc. It doesn't mean they're not important, they are just a little easier to recover from if they get missed. It does, however, expose an area that will have to be invested in, so that it doesn't keep occurring. If you commit yourself to something, you pretty much have to do it. You gave your word, you complete the mission.
It's not that I didn't realize how much I was taking on, it's that I didn't think there would be more than a day or two here or there that I didn't want to do anything 'business related'. What I found is that it only takes one or two of those days to put yourself behind, then its a matter of being able to catch up. The primary responsibilty will always have to be what is most visible, and making sure the cadence is kept up with and qualtiy material is being published, but the truth is, I haven't discovered where the rest of the items fall on the priority list, hence the juggling.
In future days, (like today) I will be developing a bit of a hierarchy for the other branches of the 'Social Media Empire' I'm building, with a set of checks and a schedule of sorts to make sure things don't get ignored or swept under the carpet. It starts with a schedule, but that has been slow to take shape because when life happens, its like the stuff in the back of a station wagon with poor suspension going around a corner, things just go everywhere. (Those of you that have ever ridden in the back of a station wagon just remembered getting tossed to the other side of the vehicle. Those that have no idea what I'm talking about were cheated out of more than one life experience, and you have something else to add to that list.)
It's not that I underestimated the difficulty, it's that I was very aggressive in my goals because I have to treat this like a business. Every business needs a plan and a schedule. No More Sick Days. Man, I hope I can get this bird to take off before I get burned out. Personally, I have skin in the game and I'm betting on myself to make it happen.
