When I first considered the Tesla Model Y, I was smitten with its sleek design, impressive range, and cutting-edge technology. However, there was one crucial aspect I overlooked—child seats.
As a parent, ensuring my kids' safety and comfort is paramount, so I needed to know:
Do child seats fit easily in the rear seats of the Model Y?
How much room is left once they’re installed?

The Challenge of Child Seats in the Model Y

Tesla’s Model Y boasts a spacious interior, but when it comes to fitting child seats, things can get a bit tricky. The rear seats are designed to accommodate passengers comfortably, but adding child seats can impact the overall space and accessibility. To provide a clear picture, I’ve tested the installation of Clek Oobr child seats—a popular choice among parents.

Installation Process

Step 1: Prepare the Rear Seats

Before installing the child seats, it’s essential to prepare the rear seats properly. This involves:

Clearing the Area: Remove any items or debris from the rear seats.
Installing the Clek Mat-Thingy: Place this protective mat under the child seat to prevent damage to your Tesla’s upholstery and keep things clean.

Step 2: Installing the Clek Oobr Child Seats

Position the Child Seat: Place the Clek Oobr child seat on the rear seat, ensuring it aligns with the seatbelt or LATCH anchors.
Secure the Seat: Depending on your preference, use either the seatbelt or LATCH system to secure the child seat. Ensure it’s tightly fastened and doesn’t move more than an inch in any direction.
Adjust the Headrest: Make sure the headrest of the child seat is adjusted correctly to support your child’s head and neck.

Room Left After Installation

Now, the big question: How much room is left after installing the child seats?
Here’s the breakdown:

Rear Seat Space: The Model Y’s rear seats remain spacious enough for two child seats without compromising too much on legroom for front passengers. However, if you have three children, fitting a third seat might be challenging.
Middle Seat Access: With two child seats installed, the middle seat becomes a tight squeeze. It’s still usable for short trips or smaller passengers, but not ideal for long journeys.
Front Seat Adjustment: Depending on the size of the child seats and the height of the front passengers, you might need to adjust the front seats slightly forward. Thankfully, the Model Y’s generous front legroom means this adjustment won’t significantly impact driver and passenger comfort.

Practical Tips for Parents

Test Before You Buy: If possible, test fit the child seats in your Model Y before purchasing. This ensures compatibility and helps you understand the space dynamics.
Regular Checks: Periodically check the installation of your child seats to ensure they remain secure. This is especially important after long trips or when the seats have been removed and reinstalled.
Organize the Backseat: Keep the rear seats organized with storage solutions like seatback organizers or under-seat bins. This helps maintain a tidy space and provides easy access to essentials.

Fitting child seats in the Tesla Model Y requires some planning and adjustments, but it’s entirely doable. The Clek Oobr child seats, combined with the Clek Mat-Thingy, offer a safe and secure solution for your little ones. Despite the slight compromise on space, the Model Y’s overall comfort and advanced features make it a fantastic family car.
