Many of you began following my work in 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Some of you first saw me on major network television—a story that is connected to why I need your direct financial support for my journalism. The interview above will help explain why I am so passionate about my style of reporting and why I approach Ukraine the way I do. My work is about much more than covering the war. I report on daily life, politics, culture, identity, and the people whose stories help us understand Ukraine beyond the headlines. Every week, I produce short videos for social media, extended interviews, and political commentary that offer knowledge and context you cannot get elsewhere. I am passionate about Ukraine because I believe its story is connected to the larger struggles shaping the world. I study Ukrainian culture and history, and I draw connections between the Black American experience and the experiences of Ukrainians—not because those histories are identical, but because the intersections can help us understand how people fight for dignity, freedom, self-determination, and the right to define themselves. That perspective informs my reporting. It helps me explain Ukraine’s relationship with the United States and place Ukraine within broader conversations about democracy, race, empire, power, and liberation. I am not interested in producing the same type of reporting as the scores of white men who already report on Ukraine. I want to help reach people with my style of reporting that will make them pay attention and feel connected to the people I cover. Simply put: I want people to see that Ukrainians are not a bunch of white people. Their history and stories are far more complex than that. In August, I will launch my YouTube channel, where I’ll publish weekly reporting and commentary about what is happening in Ukraine and explore those complexities and connect them to events elsewhere in the world.
