This comprehensive unit is designed to help GCSE students express opinions, preferences, and plans, covering a wide range of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation skills. Across six detailed lessons, students will build their confidence and competence in both written and spoken Spanish, focusing on essential topics such as sports, free-time activities, film and TV preferences, time-telling, and future plans. Matching handout for students to complete tasks during the lesson included.
Lesson 1: Students begin by learning to express opinions about sports and free-time activities using opinion verbs like "gustar" alongside irregular verbs such as "ser," "tener," and "ir." Through a combination of sentence structuring, pronunciation exercises, and interactive games, they will master the use of these verbs to articulate likes, dislikes, and justifications.
Lesson 2: Building on the vocabulary and structures introduced in Lesson 1, students will enhance their listening and reading comprehension skills using authentic texts and conversations. They will explore idiomatic expressions and key phrases within the context of leisure activities, using the example of a famous badminton player, Carolina Marín, to deepen their understanding.
Lesson 3: Focus shifts to expressing preferences related to films, TV shows, and other activities. Students will learn to use adjectives and reasons to justify their choices, with a strong emphasis on the conjugation of stem-changing verbs like "preferir." Through various activities, including translation exercises, dictation, and reading comprehension, they will become adept at discussing and justifying their preferences.
Lesson 4: Students will learn to tell and write the time, including whole hours and minutes, and practice asking and answering questions about meeting times. The lesson covers essential vocabulary related to time and days of the week, as well as grammatical structures involving "es la" and "son las." Through interactive games and listening exercises, students will gain confidence in using time-related expressions in conversation.
Lesson 5: This lesson introduces the modal verb structure "tener que + infinitive" to talk about obligations, as well as the near future tense to discuss plans. Students will practice translating and correcting sentences to ensure accurate use of these structures. Listening and translation activities will further reinforce their ability to express what they have to do and what they plan to do in the near future.
Lesson 6: The unit concludes with a focus on consolidating knowledge and enhancing comprehension skills. Students will engage in listening and reading tasks that reinforce the near future tense and other key vocabulary. Through activities such as "trap door" games, text translation, and picture task discussions, students will solidify their ability to convey future plans in both written and spoken Spanish.
This unit is perfect for GCSE students seeking to deepen their understanding and fluency in expressing opinions, preferences, and future plans. The carefully structured lessons provide a solid foundation in essential grammar and vocabulary while offering engaging and interactive ways to practice and apply new skills.
These resources closely follow the Pearson Edexcel scheme of work in terms of the overall topics and grammatical structures. However, they are designed to enhance what the textbook offers, which is why you may notice some differences. I’ve incorporated a broader range of activities, including exam-style tasks that align with the new exam format across all skills areas. So while most of the vocabulary may overlap with the book, you’ll also find additional vocabulary and tasks that aim to further support students' progress within the topics.
Due to copyright restrictions, I’ve avoided using the exact texts and audio from the Pearson book. The resources I’ve created are original, ensuring they respect the intellectual property of the authors while still complementing the textbook’s objectives. I’m confident these resources will offer extra depth and support to our students.
