Pronunciation Drills of /æ/ and /E/

For more information please visit www.dionneseslcyberlounge.com In this pronunciation audio, we are going to practice the /ae/ as in 'apple' vowel and the /E/ as in 'egg' vowel. The /æ/ sound can be a challenge for non-native English speakers. Many English learners will exchange the /æ/ sound for the /a/. Remember to always open your jaw with stretched lips and smile when you say /æ/ 'Map' will sound like 'mop' if your forget to smile. To make the /æ/ vowel sound, my jaw goes down a lot. My tongue is wide and the tip of my tongue is touching the back of my bottom front teeth. The corners of my lips are stretched into a smile. I like to call this sound a 'Smiling A'. Remember, the /ae/ is different from the /a/ sound. Listen to the difference. /æ/ /a/- map mop. To make the /E/ sound, my jaw drops and the tip of my tongue lightly touches the bottom part of my front bottom teeth. The middle part of my tongue is slightly rounded up towards the roof of my mouth. Please repeat after me: Said, red, egg, desk, net, mend, never, elevator, embrace, enter. The clearest difference between the /ae/ and /e/ is that the /ae/ is spoken with a wider, more stretched mouth. You can make this clear by seeing how your mouth gets wider as you go from /E/ to /æ/.
