Blockchain Technology

Introduction

Blockchain technology is one of the most transformative innovations of the digital age. Originally introduced as the underlying technology behind the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, blockchain has evolved into a powerful system capable of revolutionizing industries such as finance, healthcare, education, supply chain management, cybersecurity, governance, and many more.

At its core, blockchain is a decentralized and distributed digital ledger that records transactions securely, transparently, and permanently. Unlike traditional databases controlled by a central authority, blockchain operates through a network of computers where every participant maintains a copy of the ledger.

This technology eliminates the need for intermediaries, improves trust between parties, enhances security, and reduces operational costs.

What is Blockchain?

A blockchain is a chain of blocks where each block contains:

Data or transaction information
Timestamp
Cryptographic hash of the previous block
Unique hash of the current block

The blocks are linked together using cryptographic techniques, forming a secure chain that cannot easily be altered.

Once information is added to the blockchain, it becomes extremely difficult to modify or delete, making the system highly reliable and tamper-resistant.

History of Blockchain

The concept of blockchain evolved over several decades.

Early Developments

1991 – Stuart Haber and W. Scott Stornetta introduced cryptographically secured chains of blocks.
1998 – Nick Szabo proposed the idea of “Bit Gold,” a decentralized digital currency.
2008 – Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin whitepaper.
2009 – Bitcoin became the first successful blockchain implementation.
2015 – Ethereum introduced smart contracts and decentralized applications.

Today, blockchain is used far beyond cryptocurrencies.

How Blockchain Works

Blockchain works through a sequence of steps involving transaction creation, validation, and storage.

Step 1: Transaction Initiation

A user initiates a transaction, such as transferring cryptocurrency or sharing data.

Step 2: Transaction Broadcast

The transaction is broadcast to a peer-to-peer network of computers called nodes.

Step 3: Validation

Nodes validate the transaction using consensus mechanisms.

Step 4: Block Creation

Validated transactions are grouped into a block.

Step 5: Block Addition

The new block is added to the existing blockchain.

Step 6: Permanent Storage

The transaction becomes permanently recorded and visible across the network.

Structure of a Blockchain

3. Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS)

Users vote for delegates who validate transactions.

4. Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT)

Designed for enterprise blockchains with faster consensus.

Smart Contracts

Smart contracts are self-executing programs stored on a blockchain.

They automatically execute actions when predefined conditions are met.

Example:

Automatic payment release after delivery confirmation.

Advantages

Automation
Reduced intermediaries
Increased accuracy
Faster execution

Ethereum played a major role in popularizing smart contracts.
