We are still fighting to keep the Synopackage online, so now it's time to post more about it. I hope you are interested in some stats? Last time we've been celebrating 1 million requests to our Proxy Repository. It was just 8 months after launch. 100k requests was made in 3 months. This shows that starting this proxy repository is a great feature for Synology DSM users. Number of request was growing day by day, but, as usual, there is always a ceiling. It can be limited by hosting resources or by popularity of Synology devices and it's users. Let's hold that in your mind, we will get back to it later.
Would you like to play? Can you guess the total number of requests after 34 months? Yeah, it might be hard, so have a look on the chart below. It shows number of requests by day and moving average from last 7 days.

So are ready now?
In total there were 23,6 millions of requests since it started! In the "prime time" there were around 55-60k requests per day! Our hosting was barely holding such popularity. Of course it indicated some major outcomes (visible on the chart), but most of them was handled the same day. In August 2023 something had happen. Do you see it in the middle of the chart? Something caused that number of request dropped rapidly and in just 2 weeks there were 50% of requests per day than it was before. But since September 2023 it remains to be stable and there are around 26k requests per day. So let's get back to our thought: was it hosting limitation or users popularity was exhausted? We think we reach both! The hosting holds 40-50k requests per day without even noticing it. More is a challenge not only to our hosting plan, but for the Synopackage it self! Synopackage is processing lots of data in a single request. It's stores it on drive and read from cache just to make it work. Single Package Center request is generating dozen of I&O and memory operations. The memory limit for application is something the application reaches mostly and this was something we had to focus on. Storage was also reaching the limits, but this is something we can buy (if needed). Other things are not extensible in current hosting offer.
This is why we started to collect donations, so Synopackage can still be online together with Proxy Repository which is widely used. So if you care about it and use it, please consider a donation ❤🙏
Oh.. but what happen in August 2023 you may ask? Well... this might be a reason to write a post about it in the future.
Stay tuned and enjoy!
