As parents, the words we use become the soundtrack to our children’s lives. They shape how our little ones see themselves, how they treat others, and what they believe is possible for their future. I’m intentional about breaking cycles—my child won’t grow up hearing “boys don’t cry” or “I’m not racist but…”. Instead, he’ll hear words that celebrate kindness, equality, and pride in who he is.
One of the easiest ways to model this is through the books we share at home. Stories are powerful—when children see diverse characters, different kinds of families, and heroes who look like them (or nothing like them), it plants seeds of empathy and belonging. Books can do the heavy lifting for us, giving language to big conversations and quietly challenging harmful stereotypes.
That’s why I’ve pulled together a list of inclusive children’s books—from joyful picture books to gripping chapter stories—that reflect the world in all its variety. And remember, you don’t have to buy every book new. Libraries, charity shops, and book swaps are brilliant (and budget-friendly) ways to build a diverse bookshelf without breaking the bank to counter the absolute shitshow we’re seeing around us…
