Growing up in the aughts, I lived with an adolescent internet that was beginning to turn from a gangly teenager into a loudmouth adult. It was before the days of extreme commercialization, heavy advertising (except for you annoying pop-up sites *shakes fist*), and thinly veiled data mining operations calling themselves “Social Networks.” The internet I grew up with consisted of web portals and IM'ing your best friend from summer camp whilst playing a silly game that had you matching colored jewels.
I feel as though the internet became more consolidated, but at the same time has lost much of its sense of community along the way. It used to be an easy going, enjoyable, relaxing, and fun time waster. It was slow, both in its operation and vibe. In contrast, we now live with a productivity (and oligarchy producing) appliance.
The internet was once a more human experience because it was the extension of the human world; something that could be talked outside of itself. My site is named Super Slow for several reasons, and one of them is to serve as a constant reminder of this age of the internet. At Super Slow we hope to harken back to this era, as we try and create a spot on the internet that people love enjoying. A spot our users can share with the people they love too. If you choose to give, know that 100% of your donation goes to seeing this mission become a reality.
Happy surfing 🖥️🌊🏄, Matt.
