So, I am a middle-class UP boy whose parents dreamed that I would become a government officer and they could proudly say to their relatives, “Hamara ladka sarkari naukri karta hai.”
But their dream never came true. I became something that parents only say, “Hamari ek ladki PhD hai, dusri government teacher ka exam qualify ki hai.”
If someone asks, “Aapka bada ladka?” then my parents say, “Wah bahar rehta hai!” Because they do not know how to tell people about the work I do in short.
But my parents are so proud of the work I do, and I am 10th times more proud of them. I feel blessed to be their son.
Because my parents never went to school and they are illiterate, and they tell everybody about their daughters’ achievements before their son’s achievements.
And they are the first in their bloodline whose daughter has qualified for JRF and is pursuing a PhD.
In a society where a girl child was killed before birth, they were not allowed to go to school, they were forced into child marriage, and they were forced to do household work.
In that society, they raised their daughters in a way that even their friends, who themselves married their daughters after Class 12, now say, “Bhai sahab, jo aapne kar diya, wo achhe-achhe log nahi kar pate.”
And that is the inspiration that keeps me working with zero salary. Because when your work has real value, do not compare it with currency.
