A few days ago, I was asked to prepare an introduction to 3D printing for a young maker-in-the-making. Why? Because after visiting local maker labs three times, he kept hearing: “Sorry, nobody is here to explain it.” So I made him an introduction.

A practical introduction to 3D printing, from choosing the right printer and materials to slicing, troubleshooting and making your first useful objects.

After adding information on printers, materials, slicing, calibration, troubleshooting, failed prints and useful first projects, I apparently ended up making an entire starter course. It was never meant to be the holy grail of 3D printing - just a practical way to get someone past the closed door and into making.

I’m sitting down with him next week. In the meantime, the course is already available online in Dutch for anyone curious enough to start; completely free, I may add.

Corrections and suggestions are very welcome. Because if I’m going to take a simple introduction this seriously, we might as well make it useful. 🧡
