What's the first impression you want to give people?

Nov 08, 2025

Honestly? I don’t want to give people any impression of me at all. That might sound strange in a world obsessed with branding, first impressions, and curating the perfect image—but it’s the truth. I’ve learned that no matter how carefully you present yourself, people will still see what they want to see. And sometimes, what they see has more to do with their own projections than with who you actually are.

There’s something exhausting about the pressure to be instantly likable, relatable, or impressive. It turns human connection into performance. I’ve watched people twist themselves into versions they think others will accept, only to be misunderstood anyway. I’ve done it too—smiled when I didn’t feel like it, softened my voice, edited my truth. And still, someone always found a reason not to like me. That’s when I realized: trying to control how others perceive you is a losing game.

Some people are quick to judge. They’ll take one glance, one sentence, one silence, and decide they know your whole story. They’ll fill in the blanks with their own assumptions, and suddenly you’re boxed into a version of yourself you never agreed to. It’s frustrating, especially when you value depth, nuance, and authenticity. But it’s also freeing, in a way. If people are going to judge regardless, why not just be real?

I’d rather be known slowly, over time, by the people who are willing to stay long enough to understand. The ones who don’t flinch at quiet moments or misread stillness as coldness. The ones who ask questions instead of jumping to conclusions. Those are the people I want in my life—the ones who don’t need a polished first impression to see worth.

So no, I don’t craft first impressions. I show up as I am, and I let people decide what they will. Sometimes that means being misunderstood, and I’ve made peace with that. I’d rather be misread for being real than adored for being a performance. Because the people who truly see you? They don’t need a show. They just need your presence.

And maybe that’s the quietest kind of confidence there is—not needing to be liked by everyone, not needing to be anything other than yourself. I’m not here to impress. I’m here to be. And if that resonates with someone, then maybe that’s the beginning of something real.https://stirwithcatherine.com
