My journey into beekeeping began with an unexpected encounter that changed my life. One day, a swarm of bees landed in our field, and the kind beekeeper who came to relocate them sparked a fascination that has only grown since. It’s a common misconception that beekeeping is reserved for retirees with beards, but the truth is, beekeeping is for anyone with a passion for nature and a curiosity about the world of these remarkable creatures.

I’m proof that beekeeping is for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned hedge fund manager taking up a rooftop hobby in the city or someone like me, drawn to the intricate dance of the bees in the countryside. My adventure started when I invited the Barnsley Beekeeping Association to give a talk at the Young Farmers group. Little did I know that a few weeks later, I would be driving home with a hive of bees in the boot of my car, both excited and terrified at the prospect of becoming a beekeeper.

Those early days were a whirlwind of learning and adapting. I’ll never forget the first time I opened my hive, suited up like an astronaut, fumbling with the smoker, and trying not to panic. But the bees, with their tireless work ethic and fascinating behaviours, soon won me over. I’ve come a long way since those days of feeding my bees gallons of sugar syrup and nervously checking on their progress. Now, 18 years later, I’m raising queens, sharing my knowledge through talks, and teaching the next generation of beekeepers.

What drives me is not just the joy of harvesting my own honey or the satisfaction of seeing my bees thrive. It’s a deeper mission: to promote locally adapted bees and reduce the need for importing honey bee queens from overseas. Each colony I establish, each queen I rear, is a step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for our local bee populations.
