It was an early Tuesday morning, the phone rang. That was the time I would carry two phones. When the second one rang, I knew I needed to answer it, no matter what time day or night.
The man on the other line said very softly, Janet, we need your help. My heart always begins to race when I get these calls. He continued, "We have a medic in trouble", he cut his neck again, and we think we will lose him if we don't get help now!
I quicky got dressed and drove over to the location they asked me to meet them. He proceeded to tell me that John (names are changed to protect the warriors privacy) has tried to kill himself at least twice. He cut his neck for the second time. But, the worst part is that he is trying to stay stable living on over 50 medications daily! All prescribed by the VA! He gets lost on a regular basis, and drinks a lot of alcohol.
I met with his mom at a local restaurant, and she was beside herself. I worked to calm her down, and tell her the good news as to how we have helped over 15,0000 (at that time) restore their brains and rid them of their addictions. Well, you would think she saw the skies open and God touched her with this divine energy that I can't quite explain. I was so excited to see the light come back in her eyes.
I shared with her how we can get him treatment with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. She agreed. I reached out to our national group that is on call when we run into these dire situations. They told me they would call me back as soon as they find a place to send John and see if the philanthropists helping us would cover his treatment. It was a miracle. They got back to me in about 2 hours. We then met with John, even though he was 'out of it' with all of the drugs and liquor, he was willing to take us up on this possible support. It wasn't an easy meeting, but it always seemed as though I would find the right words to sooth their spirit. I know it has been the result of the prayer I would always exercise before all these tough situations. It gave him that glimpse of hope. John was willing to at least give us a chance to see what we can do. I got his mom and John on the phone with another veteran who was treated, and said he would be there for him, similar to a battle buddy.
He was flown out as soon as the next day.They called me and asked me to fly out to see if I would help get him settled and started on the 40 dives. I got there a couple hours prior to John, but when he landed, he took off and we couldn't find him for over 2 hours. With the drugs, he was totally out of it! As they say.
This is a long detailed journey, but after 30 days, with a tenacious, but gentle approach, we saved the life of that fine soldier. He was off all of his drugs but one, that he needed due to the pain from the scrapnal on his spine, and free from alcohol! He told us at the end of the 30 days, he hadn't felt that good or seen that clearly since before he enlisted.
We all cried with joy, and hope that this brings and a new day for these amazing American heroes. The condition many of them are in once they return from active duty, or after retirement is no less than grime. We must come together to find the troubled heroes, treat them and raise the funds needed to get every one of them the help they require, before they hurt themselves, others or even worse.
