Internal Highlighter Pens

Internal Highlighter Pens

Oct 04, 2021

We all have a need for Growth. Alongside Contribution, it's the factor that creates genuine joy for us. And by growth I mean in holistic knowledge, through learning and experience.

Tony Robbins describes GROWTH:

Everything is either growing or dying. It doesn’t matter how much money you have; how many people acknowledge you or what you have achieved. Unless you feel like you’re growing, you will be unhappy and unfulfilled.

When I study I like to use highlighter pens to draw the eye to a part I have identified as important enough that I want to remember it for future use. You might be the same and even involve a colour system to it; underline; circle; write in the margins; use bookmarks of some sort. The purpose is generally the same. It says you need to know this stuff more than the stuff not highlighted.

The mind does the same through anchors in a sub-conscious way. Great for safety but not so great for reflection and planning.

We are all different in our awareness of life and experiences and the learning from them, "they will never learn". Why won't they ever learn? Perhaps because we move too quickly to stop and reflect and learn.

Imagine our efficiency and effectiveness if we were able to use an internal highlighter pen to point out what was important and what wasn't important to us (the sub-conscious is a safety net and will store anything needed no matter what).

This could let us learn more about life and our abilities however it can be very hard to use a highlighter pen whilst we are moving and in the thick of something. And we move on and forget what it was we needed to remember.

If I suggest that you do some highlighting at night, sometimes we are too tired to even try, and that can be understandable as it sounds too big a task to undertake in the tired state. Where would you even start?

If however, I suggested that you habitually invested just 2 minutes in yourself each evening to ask yourself small good questions, you could actively learn from your failures and successes and your success would be 10 fold your investment, would you, could you do it? YES.

So the two questions I want you to ask yourself are:

  1. What did I enjoy about my day?

  2. What did I learn from today?

It doesn't need any more clarity. Go with it, try it, highlight pen it.

TIP: Use Habit implementation intentions. “I will [BEHAVIOUR] at [TIME] in [LOCATION].”
