Space sessions is part of a thriving independent folk scene in Berlin curated and booked by songwriter James Michael Rodgers.
It hosts groundbreaking and independent touring acts from all around the world. In it’s sixth year running we have held over two hundred concerts.
As the smaller music venues suffer to the point, that it's very hard to negotiate fair pay from their side, it's important that these grassroots and independent events are supported by the community as well. This does not make an excuse for unfair pay but rather aids as a buffer to maintain the community values and to respect all involved.
Our ethos is fair payment for musicians and everyone involved, transparency in booking and fees, inclusion for all (except fascists and bigots) and to bring live grassroots music to the city of Berlin.
We are at a point that, if we made the events ticketed, GEMA would ask for over five times the amount and the venue would also need some sort of percentage. With keeping this simple "Hat' structure it guarantees that the money goes straight from the hat to the musicians performing and running the event.
I have spoke with many venues in the last year and despite their best efforts it is becoming ridiculous to run venues locally for fair pay in independent venues.
If you consider yourself a music lover and someone who values independent voices and art then this donation will go towards things like GEMA fees, promotions and in moments where the crowd is not so busy, we can contribute more.
The venue has been amazing in supporting us and pays the act, unfortunately it is still a little under the amount that would be suitable for this level of professionalism and these economic times. Everyone including the venue and booker work for minimum return (sometimes at a loss) in order to create these events. Every support counts and helps keep Berlin Live, Independent and thriving.
