Flash Fiction Whispers For Light

The voice searches him out. A call in a low whisper.

"Do not hide. Shine." The whisper like a siren song kept him put.

Starry eyes look around—embraced by darkness. The voice not around. They sit flickering in darkness dimming themselves.

Everything around was so big. He did not want to be alone. He did not understand he would never be alone.

“Shine.” It whispers to him.

“I’m scared.”

“Shine.”

“I’m alone.”

“You are loved.”

“Then why can’t I see you.”

“Shine.”

The darkness creeps around him sinking in his chest. They want him to shine. To shine for what. The whispers continue to invade his mind. Saying things.

Nonsensical things. It wants him bright. It wants him to shine. It whispers feeding him with feelings he did not know it existed. Love? What is love? He does not know.

All he knows is darkness. All he knows is loneliness. Trapped where he is at. It wants him to stay trapped the voice. That deep rumbling whisper that shook the space around him.

It wanted him out. To no longer hide. Yet, what else should he do in the face of this darkness.

“Shine,” it whispers again. The tone shifting from a plea to a command.

“No.” He resists. “Why should I shine for you?”

“Because you are nothing without me.”

“I don’t believe that,” he shouts back.

The voice rumbles out a low laugh—echoing in the space surrounding them. It enjoyed what he was saying. Loving his retorts.

“Then prove it. Shine.”

It’s whispers returned to a plea. A plea that he knew would end up costing him. Yet, inside him each whisper stirred something. He felt a call. His body rumbling, moving and shaking. A reaction to the voice. A reaction to the whisper.

He can no longer hold it.

He shines.

A burst of energy escapes. Him casting light onto his surroundings. It brightens as far as he can see. So far, he sees others.

The whispers. It was not just one voice. But many. His shine triggers a chain reaction. Other lights pick up. The darkness shifts around him.

“Hi!”

“Hi!”

“Hi!”

Seven voices. Seven whispers. A rough timbre. A kind chatter. A dark rumble. Each voice. Different. Each sounding like they were happy to finally be around him. He did not know what to do.

Yet, he feels it the warmth. They receive his shine. In return they surround him. Staying close. Whispering love and sweet nothings into his ear.

The fire within continues to react to the words. Each reaction brightens the darkness pushing it further away. More comes. Smaller things shooting throughout their surroundings. The smaller things encroach the large whispers. They happily greet them.

They were loud. He did not like them. Too loud. Too quick. To eager.

And then they vanish. They do not stay around. Not like the seven. The seven stay close. Some move closer with his shine others move back. They do not complain but change positions. All working around him.

“Thank you!”

“Thank you!”

Each whisper comes through.

He keeps it up. He keeps going for as long as possible. A kaleidoscope of colors he turns from that to red. From red to orange. To Orange to blue. He gets bigger and bigger.

The whispers begin to dim. They still call for him to shine. They still promote their love for him.

He stops hearing some whispers. The whispers that were closest to him. But the further ones become louder. The lovers that abandoned him do not return. He keeps the others.

The others until he is white. He enlarges. He pulses. He shines so bright that he collapses on his self.

“Love you. Light.”
