The Reason Why

Today I traveled nearly an hour and a half away from my home to meet with a young, single mother who is dying. This young lady is under the age of 35 and she has the body of someone who is worn out, frail, and decrepit.
I met with her today to make a plan for her three children who range in age from 10 to 14. This young lady does not have a plan for who will care for her children and her immediate family does not support her efforts to create a stable living situation for her children at the young lady’s passing. The young mother states that her parents tell her to stop crying and be stoic, but when the young mother attempts to utilize her stoicism to venture away home to gather information and important documentation, the young lady is told to stay home because she is too sick.
The young mother is thinking that her family wants to avoid the inevitable: that the children will need to be stabilized in a permanent living environment upon the young mother’s death. Also, obviously, the parents of the young mother are having difficulty coping with their child’s impending death.
The young mother and I discussed her strategy of keeping the children within her family system. This included discussing the fathers of the children obtaining adoption and foster care licenses and checking into their criminal histories to make sure that no criminal offenses are on their records.
Our discussion also included discussing having a will, conservatorship, guardianship, and possibly having a family meeting to discuss the young mother’s final wishes and funeral plans.
I must admit that, this young lady is a tough customer. She is sharp, witty, smart, and well aware of her impending death. She was taking notes and looking up various websites during our meeting. Her determination to stabilize her children is amazing.
This is the reason for The Jackson-Williams Legacy Foundation. The young mother should not have to worry if her children are going to adopted out of their family system, community, and culture. This young lady is actively working to preserve her family even though death will take her away from it.
Every parent should have a life insurance policy on themselves and on their children. Each family system should appoint at least three households that are licensed to foster and adopt just in case there is a death, imprisonment, military deployment, Child Protective Services involvement, and etc. It is imperative that children stay within their families and communities.
