A Humble Call

It’s official. There are heavy hands at play that seek to usher in the destruction of the Black family. One facet of that is in targeting the Black children and removing them from their culture and community.
For many decades, adoption has been romanticized as the best solution for teen mothers, women with too many children, orphans, or even women on distant continents who, for many reasons, are unable to care for their children. However, some adoptions are not always the best way to achieve permanency for children.
In past years, the trend has been for white people to adopt Black children. White, prospective adoptive parents are led to believe that Black babies are orphaned and unwanted at an alarming rate greater than their peers of other ethnic backgrounds and that love is all that is needed to raise a Black child. A survey of foster and adoptive websites and brochures offer an extensive look into who is actually being recruited to adopt a specific segment of children.
I have yet to see a Black couple with a white child or any other child in these adoption advertisements. Why are white families being recruited to foster and adopt Black children?
It is documented that Black children are overly represented as needing a foster and adoptive resource, but the bulk of the children in foster care are white children. White children matter just as much as Black children and all children regardless of race deserve to have permanent, stable homes.
However, this is the spectacle of racism. And the aggressive recruitment measures to adopt Black children by white adults is disheartening.
Then the sentiment is a disregard for Black culture. Some white people actually believe that the Black child should be grateful to be saved from the ghetto, poverty of the inner city, Black on Black crime, and undereducated single mothers. They believe that white people are the only saviors for Black children.
Why such vitriol? They complain about the disparities within the Black community that lead to Black children being displaced, but when we attempt to address it, we get intense opposition. How can anyone be upset that Black people are seeking to address and fix our issues?
I stand firm in my sentiment that this is our moment, Black people. This is the time for the Black Diaspora to take action.
My humble call is for the Black Diaspora to get licensed to foster and adopt for the sake of the children within your family system. We all know single mothers and single dads. We all know children being raised by grandparents. We all have children within our families that need protection if their caregivers are no longer able to care for them. This is the time to ensure that Black children stay within their communities.
I had a very special, dear high school friend that I kept in contact with for years and the father of her children unexpectedly died at a young age. Two years later, my dear, special friend was gone due to a brief illness and her family struggled tremendously to pick up the pieces and figure out who was going to raise the children. Sometimes, unfortunately, the worst case scenario does happen. What are the chances that two healthy, young parents are dead within two years of one another? It seems that neither of them had a will or an insurance policy.
Please, let us be prepared, preemptive, and proactive. We all should have a plan that outlines who will care for our children if they become displaced and financial resources in place to not have to rely solely upon the government. Relying upon Child Protective Services to fix the situation is not feasible.
