I now start my day at night

Aug 13, 2025

It was one of those nights where the baby had finally fallen asleep and the house went still. No crying. No clutter. Just quiet.

I stood in the kitchen, not rushing for once. The light above the stove hummed. A small pile of laundry sat beside me, but I didn’t feel the usual pressure to get through it. I just stood there, breathing in the calm.

And it still tickles me when I recall the age-old advice... “Sleep when the baby sleeps.” I was like, ya right... the baby will fold the laundry when I fold the laundry? Or wash the dishes when I wash the dishes? I need those quiet moments to do the housework.

But in that quiet, I had this odd feeling that the day wasn’t ending. It was beginning. Maybe it was just me hoping for more me time. But that was when I remembered something.

It reminded me of this teaching... where in the Bible, in the book of Genesis, it says, “There was evening, and there was morning, the first day.” That line had never stood out to me before. But now it did. In the Bible’s rhythm, the day doesn’t begin when the sun rises. It begins when the sun sets.

Rest comes first.

And that small shift in perspective really helped me.

Because in this season of parenting and unpredictability, most of my mornings don’t feel like fresh starts. They feel like I’m jumping onto a moving train. But when I started seeing the evening as the beginning of the day, it changed how I handled it.

Evenings became less about crashing onto the couch, a kind of reward and more about gently preparing my heart for the day ahead. I sleep a little earlier now. Not always. But when I do, I wake up clearer. And I find that the day feels more grounded because it started with rest, not rush.

It also helps me spot those little thieves. Endless scrolling. One more episode. They trick me into thinking I’m relaxing, when I’m actually just postponing rest.

So if your days feel heavy before they’ve even begun, maybe the reset button is not the morning alarm. Maybe it’s that first quiet moment after the house goes still.

Here’s how you can think about this for yourself.

What would change if your day began with rest?
