Origin Story
It was one of those calls that keeps your body awake even after the adrenaline wears off.
Late night. Cold air. Bright lights. The kind of scene where you do your job, you do it well… and then you end up back at the fire station at some ungodly hour, trying to come down.
I’m a firefighter with the Anoka Champlin Fire Department, and if you’ve ever spent time around a station after a late call, you know what happens next:
Someone makes coffee that’s way too strong. Boots get kicked off. The room gets quieter.
And then… the conversation starts drifting into the real stuff.
Not small talk. The kind of talk that only shows up when people are tired and honest.
That night, the topic landed on surgery. Recovery. Mobility challenges. The little details people don’t think about until it’s their problem.
And then someone said it almost as a throwaway line:
“What do people even do when they only need one shoe?”
At first, we laugh, because it’s such a weird question… until you realize it isn’t weird at all.
It’s brutally practical.
