Loved reading about the 'naki tunnels - about to do my third 'collect the set' run through them - albeit with 4 wheels. Aside the SH tunnels of Mt Messenger and ex-Awakino, you may not be aware of another back-country hole with some interesting history and bypass attempts; Tangahoe Tunnel - a wee bit NE of Hawera.
Funny story from 30 years ago - my first venture on SH43. Mate and I stopped at the Ohura Prison and stared at how quaint it appeared. Guard came out and had a good chat. I commented about the thigh-high picket fence surrounding the prison and asked if the cattlestop on the driveway was to keep the inmates from escaping. Apparently they did occasionally decamp, but were usually picked up a short distance away, happy to be brought back.
