Platner and the Danger of Wanting to Believe
It turns out Platner was a piece of shit after all. The warning signs were there, obviously, but it's a strange phenomenon with liars who are (ostensibly) on your side and are powerful: You want to believe them. You want to believe IN them. And before you know it you've become an accomplice in your own corruption and humiliation.
I suppose it's good to learn about it now before he comes to have any sort of power. Bless his victim for coming forward. Bless all victims for coming forward, even when it's no guarantee the perpetrator will ever receive any kind of punishment. Think of all the victims of the Epstein Files, still waiting for their justice to be served!
I can't help but think if Platner were a centrist (Clinton) or a conservative (Trump,) he'd be well on his way to being president right now. Obviously, this isn't a left/right thing, but a man/woman thing. Give a man a little bit of power and a little bit of control over people and more often than not he abuses it.
Fortunately, I wasn't very vocal about my support of Platner, but I do look back on whatever small defense I had with regret, as I'm sure a lot of people do right now, and I thank goodness I didn't write very much about him.
Political comment, like sports, can sometimes require a short memory, and it's useless to dwell too much or beat yourself too hard when a mistake is made. If there's a lesson to be learned it's the need for a vetting process like the DSA has (Platner, fortunately, was not a DSA candidate) and use that to get the best possible candidate for the job.
