While guests settle in, there's a knock on the door. A clear clamshell container is dropped off by a female. A hushed spat ensues between the hostess and the female dropping the goods. Something is off with the timing of her delivery. The female doesn’t make eye contact with the out-of-towners and leaves in a huff down the hallway to the elevators. The hostess calls after her—then sniggers and shuts the door. A slanted comment is meant to make the guests laugh and feel comfortable—but their response is nil. Sarcasm doesn’t land. Weird guacamole served to guests stays in the little clamshell. The hostess says she loooves guacamole. But she doesn’t touch it. Hands off. Her energy is a mix of haughtiness and excitement as she sits back sipping a full balloon-glass of red wine, watching the guests eat and chat. There is an atmosphere of control—relaxed and sophisticated is purely feigned. Hovering. After some time, the clamshell is attentively closed and immediately discarded in the kitchen trash bin. The hostess washes her hands. She and family won’t be eating the guacamole. They order takeout instead—restaurant delivery.

Real-life story—part 2: (July 2022 cont…) In my world the joy of a boy playing with dogs in a pool on a hot summer afternoon supersedes an easily replaceable $50 pool floatie. I would have said laugh and play until it pops. Ok. Strange. The demand feels cold. I’m ready to leave back to Connecticut—the entire trip to New Jersey the past 24hours has already been strange and awkward. I can’t wait to get in my car and drive. Suddenly, across from me, I see the woman tightly clasping an old man’s hand—the energy from the woman is territorial. I didn’t even see him enter into the yard and sit down. I only see the man’s hand and knees. I’m really ready to leave. Feel like I just want to get out of there. It’s a home with an empty heart—a broken heart. I feel it clearly. Some small conversation takes place, trite energy. I get up to go—I really want to leave—tell my boy to get ready, dry off, get your stuff together. I’m now standing—talking to someone in front of me and I crack a joke. Everyone laughs. I notice the man standing on my right. He is tall—looks in my eyes—making strong, direct eye contact. I feel uncomfortable and look away—thinking to myself wtf?? It’s in front of his woman. I am shocked and feel extremely uncomfortable now. Suddenly, someone wants to take a bunch of photos. I hate photos. The social dilemma of photographing every event. Eye roll. They’re pushing me into the photos. I cave and do the whole thing just to get out of there quickly and politely. I’m inching towards the exit. Last thing I remember I’m back in the house, almost out the door—in the kitchen and now saying final thank yous and goodbyes. The man is suddenly kind to me. He seems warmer—maybe his guard is down. I feel his woman is raging inside. I just want to get out. A real-life story, Part 1: 2022. It’s a beautiful day in July. I’m in New Jersey, on the way to a home. Someone has made plans for the afternoon. I’m just going with the flow. I am told the woman of the house is a mess—insecure, with large pores all over her nose—trying to hold onto her beauty—and the man of the house is an a%%hle—a complete jerk who abuses this woman—a cheater and a player—and his two sons are “horrible” rude, and selfish—also a%%hles—just like their father. I feel uncomfortable hearing these words spewed as I am about to enter their home as a guest. Too much information I didn’t need or want to hear. When I hear the words about the two sons I immediately hear my dream team say “no, they are traumatized.” My ears perk. I know vicious gossip always signals inauthenticity and non-integrity in the person speaking it. It’s an omen. We arrive to the home. First thing I notice is the house is nice but a quarter the size of my family’s home in CT—and the atmosphere is unhappy—an inner emptiness, the tension is palpable. It is clear we are not really welcome—our being there is an inconvenience. I’m already thinking it is strange how we ended up here. It is obvious the woman is feigning kindness—we have inconvenienced them. The male doesn’t want to even be bothered to greet guests who have arrived in his house. He is irritated and I haven’t even seen him. We go along with the situation—small talk, eat, etc. and my boy swims in the pool and plays with the dogs. The woman gets a hushed phone call. It’s obvious a transgression has been made. She then tells us the dogs are not allowed to get on the swan pool floatie with my boy—get them off the floatie immediately. Uncomfortable.
