Foundation Single crochet, Άρριχτο Γαιτανάκι μαζί με αλυσιδίτσα, Maglia Bassa di Fontazion

English version

I've already shown you what it takes to start, continue and finish a crochet project.

That is, starting by making the basic chain stitch and then using the basic stitches such as single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet etc.

But there is still a technique for starting a scheme beyond what we have already seen.

In this tutorial I will show you another foundation stitch: an alternative way to start a crochet project.

The foundation stitches are the combination of two stitches, one of which is the chain stitch, and the other is the stitch that you will use after the chain stitch and the basic principle, is the same no matter which foundation stitch you are making, Foundation Single Crochet [fsc], Foundation Half Double Crochet [fhdc], or Foundation Double Crochet [fdc].

Foundation stitches can be used instead of making a number of chains and then working stitches into the chains and this will be when you are working in rows.

By using this you avoid the hassle of any lost stitches and obtain a more elastic edge.

For the rest, we work as you already know. This technique can be used for any project and the number of stitches to cast on are the same as the project you want to follow.

Each height of stitch starts with a slip knot on your hook, and then a number of chains, for instance in order to make the single crochet, chain 2.

Let's start by making the  slip Knot and 2 chains.

Step 1

Then, let's go back and insert the hook into the first of the stitches we made.

1 . (Pull up one loop) We take the yarn and bring it forward, now we have two loops on the hook.

2 .We make a yarn over and pass the yarn through one of the two loops.

3. Then we make one more yarn over and pass the yarn through the other two loops.

Step 2 and for the number of stitches need.

From now on begins the step that you will have to repeat until you obtain the number of stitches you need for the project.

Start the Row

1 . Make a slip knot and chain 2.

This is all you need to start your foundation chain of single crochet stitches. If you were making foundation double crochet stitches, or another version, you would need to make more chain stitches at the beginning.

2. Make the Chain Part of the Stitch

Insert the hook in the first chain you made. Yarn over and draw up a loop. This counts as making the chain part of the foundation single crochet stitch.

3. Start the Single Crochet Part of the Stitch

You should have two loops on your hook.

Yarn over and draw up a loop. This is similar to the first step in making a single crochet.

You should still have two loops on your hook.

4. Finish the Single Crochet Part of the Stitch

Yarn over and draw the hook through both loops on your hook. This completes the single crochet.

The stitch you just drew the loop (on the right side if you're right-handed) through is the top of the first stitch and what you would look at when counting stitches.

5. Get Ready for the Next Stitch

Take a look at your first foundation single crochet.

On the other edge, which will be the bottom, the longer stitch is the chain part of the stitch. This is where you'll insert the hook for the next stitch.

 Make the Next FSC

Insert the crochet hook into the chain part of the previous stitch.

Again, be sure to go through the chain so you end up with two strands on the left side of the hook. It's a little easier to see both strands as you add more stitches.

Repeat the same steps from the first stitch. A simple summary of the stitch process goes like this:

Insert hook, yarn over, draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through both loops.

Work Vertically on Your Foundation Row

Although most crochet works horizontally from right to left (or left to right if you crochet left-handed), here you'll work vertically. That's because the foundation single crochet process is more like making your starting chain.

Once you make all the FSC stitches you need to finish the row, you can then turn your work and begin as usual working horizontally.

Continue Crocheting Your Project

Now that you have your first foundation row of stitches, you can continue on in your pattern.

How to Foundation Half Double Crochet

The Foundation Half Double crochet is similar to the foundation single crochet with one small addition: an extra yarn over. Easy, right? Let’s do it!

Grab your hook and your yarn and make a slip knot

Then 1. Chain two.

. Yarn over, insert hook into very first chain made

3. Pull up a loop (we now have three loops on hook).

4. Yarn over, pull through one loop ( we still have three loops on hook).

5. Yarn over, pull through all three loops on hook.

First Foundation Half Double Crochet complete!

To make subsequent stitches you will…

6. Yarn over, insert hook into both sides of the TOP of the previous stitch.

7. Pull up a loop (three loops on hook).

8. Yarn over, pull through one loop (three loops on hook).

9. Yarn over, pull through all three loops on hook.

Voila! The second Foundation Half Double crochet stitch is complete! Now you’ll simply add to those foundation half double crochet stitches until your foundation row reaches desired length.  You’ll also want to learn these two tips for making sure that #1) your chain isn’t too tight (does not curl) and #2) each stitch looks uniform in shape.

To make sure your foundation row does not curl you’ll need to make sure that your stitches aren’t too tight.

Foundation Half Double Crochet (US) or Foundation Half Treble Crochet (UK) offers an alternative way to start a new crochet project.

Usually, you might see the first row of a pattern written something like this: Ch 11, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Now, replace that with a foundation half double crochet: Fhdc 10.

Simple? Ouais.

IT – Versione in italiano

Ora abbiamo 2  asole sull’uncinetto

Abbiamo ancora 2 asole sull’incineto

Facile, vero?
