Your Marketing Career Is a Scam, Here’s What You Should Do About It

Have you ever stopped to ask how old marketing really is?

Not just the idea of telling people about a product—but the frameworks, the job titles, the endless certifications, the “funnels,” and the career ladders built on skills that are increasingly irrelevant. We’re still teaching people to become brand managers when the world is being run by category designers.

The truth is: your marketing career, as it’s been sold to you, is outdated.

Marketing as You Know It Is Dead

Traditional marketing was built on two things:

  • Fighting for market share

  • Convincing people why your product is better

But that’s no longer enough. The best companies today don’t enter crowded markets—they create their own. Think of Salesforce, Airbnb, HubSpot, or even Duolingo. They didn’t just compete; they defined a new category and won by default.

That’s the power of category design—and if you’re still focusing on running paid campaigns, optimizing CTAs, or obsessing over engagement rates without understanding what category you’re in or how to lead it, then you’re operating in a system built for obsolescence.

The Market Has Become the Category

“Marketing” used to mean communicating to a target market. But now, the market is the message. People don’t just buy products—they join movements, identities, categories that resonate with who they are and where they’re going.

Instead of just learning how to “capture demand,” we need to start creating it. That’s what category designers do. They don’t just run ads—they shape conversations, change language, and rewire how people see the world.

Marketing Careers Need Precision and Pathing

If you’re building a marketing career today, generalist hustle isn’t going to cut it. You need a point of view. You need strategic depth.

You need to stop trying to “do it all” and start building mastery in roles that directly support category growth:

  • Narrative Design

  • Community-Led Growth

  • Category Evangelism

  • Product Marketing with Strategic POV

  • Lifecycle with Revenue Alignment

The mistake most marketers make is chasing trends instead of sharpening a path. They end up stuck in roles that look good on paper but have zero compounding value.

You Can Do It All But Not Alone

Becoming a “full-stack marketer” is valuable to build diversity in your career but it's not a sustainble path to expertise. Knowing how to do everything doesn't mean you have to. You don’t need to be everything to everyone.

You need to surround yourself with collaborators, mentors, and creators who understand the power of category-led growth.

What you can do is build the vision. You can become the person who sees the game clearly—who can orchestrate the pieces, shape the category, and guide the brand through the noise. But not by doing every tactic. That’s how you burn out. That’s how you stay small.

So What Should You Do Instead?

✅ Learn the principles of category design (start with Play Bigger)
✅ Shift your mindset from campaigns to movements
✅ Create or join a team that’s obsessed with changing the conversation
✅ Stop treating marketing like a function—start treating it like leadership
✅ Build a career around the category, not just the company

Marketing is not what it used to be. That’s an opportunity. If you’re willing to stop playing someone else’s game and start designing your own.
