Holding Space for Myself

Holding Space for Myself

Aug 20, 2025

Lately, I’ve been asking myself what I need more of in my life right now. The older I get, and the deeper I go into different aspects of my long kink journey, the more I notice what’s missing day to day. It isn’t about chasing new or adding more experiences to the list; that is a given. And I’ve already explored a lot of different dynamics, roles, and communities. What I keep coming back to isn’t “more doing,” but “more being.” More balance. And when I sit with it honestly, it boils down to three things: space, connection, and patience.

For space, it’s not just about quiet time, it’s about carving out room to breathe when life and kink both get busy. I’ve been involved in planning, organizing, and holding space for others, and while that’s meaningful, it also means I often put myself last. I need small, regular moments just for me. Ten or fifteen minutes in the morning to drink my coffee without scrolling, or to journal without editing myself. Walking somewhere without a plan, or even just letting myself sit in silence without filling it with noise. And space to notice how I feel, not just how I should be showing up for others. In kink, too, I think about how much I value aftercare and decompression; it’s not only about the scene, but the pause that follows. Maybe I need to give myself that same kind of aftercare in everyday life.

For connection, I keep realizing it’s not about having more people around, but about being intentional with the people I let close. I want relationships, kinky or not, where I don’t have to explain myself or shrink down to fit. Where I can be messy, or tick, or stim, or talk about my offbeat thoughts without someone raising an eyebrow. The best parts of my kink community have always been the people who get it, who can hold honesty, laughter, vulnerability, or awkwardness without judgment. I want more of that, and I know it means putting energy into friendships and communities that feel safe, queer-friendly, and genuinely inclusive. That might look like reaching out more intentionally, planning time with the people who matter, or choosing spaces where I feel permission to show up as my whole self.

And patience, that one feels the hardest, and the most important. I get stuck thinking I should have it all figured out by now. That, with the years I’ve put into kink and personal growth, I should have a blueprint for what’s next. But it doesn’t work that way. Growth isn’t linear, and sometimes it’s not about climbing higher but circling deeper. Patience, for me, means noticing the small wins: a day where I don’t pick myself apart, a choice that feels aligned even if it’s not perfect, a moment where I rest without guilt. It might mean giving myself practices that slow me down, such as painting, working on a puzzle, or listening to a podcast without multitasking. And in kink terms, I have been learning that it’s a reminder that not every dynamic or role needs to be rushed into, labelled, or locked down right away. Taking the time to explore, to sit with curiosity, and to let things unfold at their own pace often creates a stronger foundation. Patience gives space for trust to grow, for boundaries to be understood, and for deeper layers of connection to emerge. Sometimes the slow burn is what allows a relationship or a dynamic to feel not just exciting in the moment, but sustainable and meaningful over time.

If I can lean into these things, space, connection, and patience, I believe I’ll be able to find a steadier foundation. It means giving myself permission to breathe, not to have all the answers, and to let things come together in their own time. I think that will help me feel more grounded and less caught up in pressure, and instead more present in both my everyday life and in how I show up within community and kink. It’s not a magic solution, and it won’t erase the hard parts, but it might make the path ahead feel clearer, lighter, and more intentional. And honestly, right now, that feels like exactly the kind of shift I need.
