Genesis 1:1–31
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
When Everything Was New
Have you ever stood somewhere beautiful and just thought.. How did all of this get here??
Maybe it was when you were watching the sun rise over the sea, seeing the sky filled with stars, walking through a forest or looking at the face of someone you love. ❤️
There are moments when creation makes us stop to be in the moment and grateful.
Genesis 1 begins with.. “In the beginning, God created…”
Before the noise. Before the people. Before the problems. Before history as we know it. God was there, he is our creator!! ✨ And He didn’t create the world by accident. He spoke, and light appeared.
He separated the waters and formed the sky. He brought dry land out of the waters. He caused plants and trees to grow. He placed the sun, moon and stars in the heavens. He filled the seas with living creatures and the skies with birds. Then came the animals of the earth.
And after each part of creation, God looked at what He had made and saw that it was good.
There is something deeply comforting about that. God wasn’t rushing. He wasn’t creating because He was trying to fix a mistake. He was creating intentionally.
And then, finally, He created humanity. Genesis says that people were made in the image of God. (☺️ we are intentionally made)
That means there is something about human beings that reflects our Creator. Every person carries a dignity and value that isn’t dependent on their job, appearance, achievements, bank balance or popularity.
Think about that for a moment!!
Before you had achieved anything, you had value!!
Before you had a career, a relationship, qualifications, followers, possessions or accomplishments, you were already God’s creation.. You didn’t have to earn your right to exist.
God gave you life! And Genesis tells us that He looked at what He had made and called it good.
Sometimes you can look at the world around you and wonder where the goodness has gone.
We see suffering. We experience disappointment. People hurt us. Plans fall apart. Relationships change. We can wake up carrying anxiety about things that haven’t even happened yet.
And sometimes the hardest person to believe is valuable is ourselves.
You might look at your own life and see everything you wish were different.
“I’m not where I thought I’d be.”
“I’ve made too many mistakes.”
“Other people seem to have it all together.”
“Maybe I’ve wasted too much time.”
“Maybe I’m not enough.”
But Genesis takes us back to the beginning. Before all those voices, there was God. And before you had an opinion about yourself, God had already created you.
Your value didn’t begin with what you could accomplish. That matters because we live in a world that constantly measures people.
“How successful are you?”
“How much do you earn?”
“How do you look?”
“What have you achieved?”
“How many people know you?”
But God doesn’t introduce humanity that way.
He doesn’t say, ‘These people are valuable because they are impressive.’
He creates them in His image. He creates US in his image ✨
You Were Made on Purpose
Genesis 1 also reminds us that God brings order out of what appears empty and chaotic.
Light comes.
Then the sky.
Then land.
Then life.
Creation unfolds step by step.
Sometimes our lives feel like the opposite.
We want God to show us the entire plan immediately.
We want to know where we’re going, how everything will work out and when the difficult season will end.
But Genesis doesn’t show us God revealing the entire picture at once.
He creates one thing, then another..
There is a process.
And perhaps that’s something we need to remember when our own lives feel unfinished.
Being unfinished doesn’t mean being forgotten.
You might not understand what God is doing right now.
You might be in a season where there seems to be more questions than answers?!
But you don’t have to know the whole story to trust the One who does.
The God who created light out of darkness is not intimidated by the areas of your life that still feel doubtful.
Look Around You
There’s another beautiful part of Genesis 1 that we can easily rush past.
God creates an incredible variety of life.
The heavens.
The oceans.
The land.
Plants.
Trees.
Birds.
Fish.
Animals.
And people.
Creation is full of colour, difference and beauty.
That means the ordinary world around us can become a reminder of God.
The morning light coming through your window. A tree moving in the wind. The sound of rain. The changing seasons. The night sky. A child’s laughter. A meal shared with someone you love.
These things are reminders that God made this. ✨
And perhaps we’ve become so used to creation that we’ve stopped being amazed by it.
We scroll through photographs of beautiful places without thinking about the Creator behind the beauty itself.
And Then There’s Us
Perhaps the most challenging part of Genesis 1 isn’t that God created the world..
But that He entrusted humanity with a place within it. 🙏
We are called to care for what He has made.
That includes how we treat creation, but it also includes how we treat people.
If every person is made in God’s image, then the person who annoys you has value.
The person you disagree with has value.
The stranger you walk past has value.
The person who doesn’t look like you, think like you or live like you has value.
And so do you.
That doesn’t mean we ignore wrongdoing or pretend difficult situations aren’t difficult.
It means we choose to see people through a bigger lens.
They are more than their worst decision..
More than their appearance..
More than their job..
More than their social status..
They bear the image of their Creator!
And so do you. 🫶
What If You Started There?
Maybe today you don’t need another complicated answer. Maybe you just need to go back to the beginning. Seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33)
God created..
God brought light..
God brought order..
God brought life..
God called His creation good..
And God created you..
So when you feel insignificant, remember where your worth comes from.
When you feel lost, remember who created you.
When life feels chaotic, remember that God is not overwhelmed by chaos.
When you compare yourself with everyone around you, remember that you don’t need to become someone else to have value.
And when you look at the world around you, take a moment to actually see it.
The sky.
The trees.
The people.
The life around you.
Let creation remind you of the Creator..!
You don’t have to understand everything today. You don’t have to have your entire future worked out. You don’t even have to feel particularly strong. You can begin where Genesis begins:
God is here.
God created.
God called it good.
And I am part of His creation. 🙏❤️✨
Here is a Prayer for you 🙏
God, You are the Creator.
Everything I see ultimately points back to You. The heavens, the earth, the beauty around me, and even my own life are gifts from Your hands.
Thank You for creating me.
When I forget my worth, remind me where it comes from. Help me stop measuring myself by what I achieve, what other people think of me, or how far ahead I feel I should be.
When life feels chaotic, help me trust You in the process.
I don’t need to understand everything at once. I don’t need to have every answer today. I choose to trust the God who was there in the beginning and who is still with me now.
Help me see Your creation with fresh eyes.
Help me treat people with the dignity they carry because they are made in Your image.
And help me remember that my life is not meaningless or accidental. You created me, You know me, and I can place my life in Your hands.
Today, I choose to slow down, notice Your goodness, trust Your timing and remember who You are.
