The year I am making an effort to work on my land navigation skills while I go on my regular hikes and camping trips. Skills I have a some experience with, but can always use some improvements. Of course there is a focus on old school paper maps and compass, but I’m also looking for tools with offline digital maps.
ATAK has been on my radar for years now. I dowloaded it, and it’s special cousin ITAK a few years ago, messed around with them for a hot minute but then, like too many of my pursuits, set it aside for something shinier. Also like many of my pursuits, I come across something that brings my interests back.
This time, it was a recent YouTube video from S2 Underground.
So I download ATAK on the unlocked Android phone that I use a small field tablet, and ITAK for my iPhone. ITAK was quickly deleted for its still hot garbage, but I’ve really started to dive into ATAK over the past few weeks. To the point that I bought an 8” Android tablet primarily using ATAK plus some other ham radio and adjacent apps in a vehicle.
Here is the “full length” version of the first 2 videos I recorded on the topic of ATAK. Basically it’s the raw video of my outings. All the segments put together from my camera before I start editing it down to a shorter video for YouTube.
