One of the most haunting places on Earth is the ghost town of Pripyat, Ukraine, where time seems to have stopped since the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Founded in 1970, Pripyat was once a youthful, modern city, home to nearly 50,000 residents — mostly workers and engineers of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Tragedy struck in 1986, when the reactor exploded, releasing an immense amount of radiation into the environment. Within hours, the entire population had to evacuate, leaving behind a poisoned town where death, silence, and memory merged into one.
What makes Pripyat so eerie is that everything remains frozen in time, as if life had been suspended in a single moment. Schoolbooks lie open on desks, dolls are covered in dust, and the Ferris wheel in the park stands still, never having opened. Stepping into Pripyat gives visitors an uncanny feeling — as if the residents had just walked away, and might return at any moment.
