I'm a painter expressing nature using bright colors and bold movement. My work is based in figurative painting, but I use abstraction to relay emotions in the work. I employ a wide variety of materials, from oil paint to mixed media of acrylic, charcoal and pastels. I often use my hands in addition to brushes and spatulas.
I work in series, frequently painting scenes from my travels. In traveling, I search the earth, discovering new people, colors, truth, ways of life, myself. When I later paint, I travel again, both in memory and in imagination. I desire to explore and to discover.
I intend my paintings to make people feel closer to home, even as they are being taken away on an adventure. I want them to catch a glimpse of a new place; to travel somewhere they've never been. I want to bring people out of their current reality: to feel the light, smell the air, and feel connected, as if they had been there themselves. I also have series of paintings grappling with themes of loss, lamenting, homesickness, and wanderlust.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Austin, I currently reside in Leipzig, Germany. More at www.sarahbusskamp.com.
