UPI Transaction Volume Stays Above 24 Billion Despite a 1.8% M-o-M Dip in September, Daily Transactions Cross 800 Million for the First Time

India’s Unified Payments Interface processed 24.07 billion transactions worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India, a modest month-on-month dip from August’s record, but still a genuinely strong number that underlines just how deeply UPI has embedded itself into everyday India.

imageHere’s the number behind the dip. Transaction volume fell 1.8% month-on-month, from August’s record 24.51 billion down to September’s 24.07 billion, and transaction value also slipped 1.5%, from Rs 29.82 lakh crore to Rs 29.37 lakh crore. But the reason is refreshingly simple and not a cause for concern, August had 31 days compared to September’s 30, a one-day calendar difference largely explains the entire drop.

The real story is actually in the daily averages, not the monthly totals. UPI processed an average of 802 million transactions per day in September, crossing 800 million in a single day for the very first time, with average daily transaction value standing at around Rs 97,913 crore. On a like-for-like daily basis, both transaction counts and value quietly hit fresh highs even as the monthly number dipped, this is best read as a calendar effect, not a slowdown in underlying usage.

The year-on-year growth story remains genuinely impressive. Compared to September 2025’s roughly 19.63 billion transactions, volume grew 23% year-on-year, while transaction value rose 18%. Zooming out further, UPI recorded nearly 145 billion transactions worth Rs 177 lakh crore in the April-September period of 2026, compared to 114 billion transactions worth Rs 148 lakh crore during the same period last year, a 27% year-on-year jump across the first half of the fiscal year.

Market share context adds useful color too. In August, PhonePe led with a 45.64% share of transaction volume, followed by Google Pay at 32.26% and Paytm at 8.03%, together the three apps accounted for nearly 86% of all UPI volume. NPCI hasn’t yet released September’s app-wise breakup, though Apple Pay’s recent entry into India’s UPI ecosystem through Axis Bank, Razorpay and Cashfree adds a new global competitor to watch in the months ahead.

From crossing 23 billion for the first time in May to touching 800 million daily transactions in September, UPI’s growth curve in 2026 keeps setting new benchmarks, even when the month-on-month number briefly dips.
