Oracle's AI Bet Is Paying Off in Revenue — and Costing $125 Billion in Debt

Oracle's Q1 FY2027 earnings, released September 10, tell two true stories at once: explosive AI demand, and a balance sheet stretched to fund it.

The good news:
→ Total revenue hit $19.35 billion, up 30% year-over-year, beating analyst estimates of $19.14B
→ Cloud infrastructure revenue more than doubled — up 121% to $7.4 billion
→ Total cloud revenue climbed 62% to $11.6 billion
→ Net income jumped 60% to $4.7 billion
→ Remaining Performance Obligations (future contracted revenue) reached $664 billion, up $209B year-over-year
→ Oracle closed $30+ billion in new AI contracts during the quarter "without requiring additional capital"
→ It delivered 850 megawatts of new AI data-center capacity and deployed 300,000+ GPUs in the quarter alone

The cost of getting there:
→ Total debt now stands at $125 billion
→ Free cash flow was negative $5 billion for the quarter, versus negative $362 million a year earlier
→ Quarterly capital expenditures soared to $28.5 billion, up from $8.5 billion a year ago
→ Full-year capex is guided at $90–95 billion, with no timetable yet for returning to positive free cash flow
→ Oracle stock is still down roughly 20% for the year despite the earnings beat — investors popped the stock after the open, then it closed nearly 2% lower

Here's what stands out: Oracle is proving the AI demand is real — the $664B backlog and 121% infrastructure growth aren't guesses, they're signed contracts and delivered megawatts. But Oracle also has a weaker cash position and lower credit rating than hyperscaler rivals like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, who are funding similar buildouts largely from existing cash flow rather than borrowed money.

The real test isn't this quarter's revenue number — it's whether that $664 billion backlog converts into cash fast enough to service $125 billion in debt before the market's patience runs out. Thursday's results answered the revenue question. The cash question is still open.

Does a growth story built this heavily on debt change how you'd value a company — or does revenue growth like this justify the risk?
