NSE Raises Rs 6,746 Crore from Anchor Investors Ahead of India's Largest-Ever IPO

The National Stock Exchange of India has raised Rs 6,746.18 crore from anchor investors ahead of its initial public offering, which opened for public subscription on September 17, 2026, marking a landmark moment for a listing that had remained pending for years amid regulatory hurdles.

Here's how the anchor round was structured. NSE allocated 3.77 crore equity shares to more than 150 anchor investors at Rs 1,785 apiece, the upper end of its price band, aggregating to Rs 6,746.18 crore. The anchor book drew a genuinely global mix of capital, sovereign wealth funds, global asset managers, mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds and alternative investment platforms all participated, reflecting strong institutional confidence in NSE's market leadership.

The investor lineup reads like a who's who of global finance. Life Insurance Corporation of India emerged as the single largest anchor investor, participating through three entities, LIC, LIC Mutual Fund and LIC Pension Fund, and investing more than Rs 500 crore. Alongside LIC, the round drew Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, GIC Singapore, Goldman Sachs, Fidelity Funds, Eastspring and HSBC Global Asset Management.

The numbers behind the split matter too. Foreign institutional investors accounted for roughly 43% of the anchor book, contributing Rs 2,883 crore, with more than 20 foreign long-only funds from the US, Europe and Asia participating. Domestic institutions weren't far behind, more than 25 large mutual funds and 11 major insurance and pension companies together invested around Rs 3,588 crore, or 53% of the anchor book, including names like ICICI Prudential, HDFC, Nippon India, Axis, Kotak and UTI Mutual Fund.

The scale of the broader IPO puts this in perspective. NSE is offering up to 12.64 crore equity shares entirely through an offer for sale, meaning existing shareholders are selling, not the company raising fresh capital, and at the upper price band, the issue is targeting nearly Rs 22,569 crore, valuing NSE at roughly Rs 4.42 lakh crore. The public issue runs from September 17 to September 21, with listing tentatively expected on September 24, 2026.

From years of regulatory delay to India's largest-ever public listing, NSE's anchor round is a strong signal that global capital is ready to bet big on India's own financial infrastructure.
