NABVENTURES Fund II Secures Rs 450 Crore in Its First Close, Targets a Rs 1,500 Crore Corpus for Agri and Rural Startups

NABVENTURES, the venture capital arm of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), has announced the first close of its second fund, securing commitments of Rs 450 crore. The fund is targeting a total corpus of Rs 1,500 crore, including a green-shoe option for additional commitments, with NABARD itself acting as the anchor investor.

imageHere’s what this fund is built to do. NABVENTURES Fund II will back early- and growth-stage companies that use technology to solve structural problems across India’s agriculture and rural economy. The investment focus covers agri-tech, food and agribusiness, rural fintech, climate-smart solutions, and supply chain and logistics, along with other businesses contributing to rural transformation.

The track record behind it adds context. NABVENTURES’ earlier funds have collectively backed 23 enterprises, and Fund II is designed to build on that experience by supporting promising companies at different stages of growth. NABARD Chairman Dr. Shaji Krishnan V described the first close as an important milestone in the institution’s commitment to innovation-led growth, saying the fund aims to partner with entrepreneurs building solutions for critical challenges across the agricultural ecosystem.

The value here goes beyond capital. Alongside funding, NABVENTURES plans to use NABARD’s nationwide presence and deep sector expertise to help its portfolio companies scale operations and reach rural markets, something most urban-focused venture funds simply cannot offer. For an agritech founder, access to that rural distribution and institutional network can be as valuable as the cheque itself.

The timing also stands out. This announcement comes against a backdrop of a broader funding slowdown in the agritech and rural sector, which makes a government-backed anchor commitment especially meaningful for founders working in categories that private capital has often found hard to underwrite.

The reality check worth noting: a first close is an early milestone, not the finish line. The fund still needs to raise roughly Rs 1,050 crore more to reach its Rs 1,500 crore target.

From farm-level technology to rural fintech, NABVENTURES Fund II is a signal that India’s agriculture and rural economy is being treated as a serious venture opportunity, not just a policy priority.
