Meet the 19-Year-Old Betting $3,499 Can Make “the Mac Mini of AI Agents”

While most teenagers are figuring out their first semester of college, Zain Javaid just raised $11 million to build hardware for a problem almost nobody else is solving: what happens to your most personal AI agent when the company that made it disappears, or decides to look at your data?

imageGhost, Javaid’s San Francisco startup, came out of stealth this week with Core — a screenless $3,499 computer built specifically to run personal AI agents.

Here’s what makes it different from just another AI gadget:

→ Led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Abstract, Audacious Ventures, SV Angel, and Nova also investing
→ Javaid is 19, a former quant trader, leading a founding team that includes Nicholas Chua (19), Yifei Chen (24), and Gautam Sharda (23)
→ Core ships with an Nvidia RTX Pro 4000 Blackwell GPU built in, rated at 770 AI TOPS, and comes preloaded with open models (Qwen-3.8-Next, Qwen-3.8-27B, Gemma-4-31B)
→ Every model, every memory, and all processing happens on the device itself — end-to-end encrypted, with no cloud dependency and no subscription required
→ The core design promise: the device keeps working even if Ghost the company shuts down, because nothing it does depends on Ghost’s servers staying online
→ It’s controlled entirely through a phone app or voice — no screen on the device itself — described by Javaid as a “brain in a box”
→ The first production batch reportedly sold out on launch day; it ships October 31

Javaid’s argument is a direct challenge to how every major AI assistant works today: an agent that knows your health data, your habits, your private messages, and your daily routine, he says, “should not live on infrastructure someone else owns.” That’s a sharp bet against the entire cloud-AI-assistant model Google, Amazon, and Apple have built their products on.

It’s also a real gamble on price and timing. $3,499 is a serious ask for unproven hardware from a one-year-old, four-person company — and the honest math is that it only beats a cloud AI subscription if you keep using it for years. But as AI agents start handling more sensitive parts of people’s lives, “where does this data actually live” is becoming a real question, not just a privacy-advocate talking point.

Would you pay a premium upfront for an AI agent that’s guaranteed to stay fully private and fully yours — or does convenience win regardless?
