Google's AI Just Grew a "Buy" Button — And It's Pointing at Flipkart, Not Amazon

Google is quietly testing something that changes what an AI chat window actually does: letting it complete a purchase, not just recommend one.

In this pilot, select users in India see a Flipkart-branded "Buy" button appear inside Gemini and AI Mode. Tap it, and you go straight into a Flipkart checkout flow — without ever leaving Google's AI interface.

imageHere's what's confirmed, and what's still murky:

→ The test currently covers a narrow catalog — smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories — for a limited set of users
→ Amazon listings still show up alongside Flipkart's in the same results, but without a direct-purchase option — only Flipkart gets the "Buy" button right now
→ Google invested roughly $350 million in Walmart-owned Flipkart in 2024, raising an obvious question: does Google's own stake shape which retailer gets the one-click advantage?
→ A broader rollout is planned for October, deliberately timed just ahead of India's festive shopping season — the country's biggest e-commerce window of the year
→ It appears to run on Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard it introduced this year so AI agents can transact directly with retailers — though TechCrunch couldn't confirm exactly what's powering this specific test
→ What's still undisclosed: whether checkout happens fully inside Gemini or hands off to Flipkart's app, and the commercial terms — who pays whom, and how much

Here's why this matters beyond one shopping feature: for years, AI assistants have been judged on how well they answer a question. This test is Google deciding AI should be judged on whether it can close a transaction. That's a much bigger shift — it turns the AI interface itself into a storefront, with Google sitting in the middle of every purchase as both search engine and checkout counter.

And the Amazon detail is the one worth watching closest. If Google's own AI surfaces quietly favor a company Google has invested in, "neutral AI shopping assistant" becomes a much harder claim to make — especially during India's biggest shopping season, when that one-click advantage is worth the most.

Would you trust an AI assistant to pick where you buy from — or does that feel like a decision you'd rather keep for yourself?
