Four Indian Space Startups Just Reached Orbit — And One of Them Is Processing Satellite Data With AI Before It Even Reaches Earth

On October 1, four Indian space startups rode SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission into orbit together — a quiet but significant moment for India's private space industry.

imageHere's what each company sent up, and why the mission matters beyond the launch itself:

→ Dhruva Space's LEAP-2 satellite carried SatLeo Labs' TAPAS-1 thermal-imaging payload — built to capture heat-signature data from orbit
→ TakeMe2Space launched MOI-1A, a satellite designed to process Earth-observation imagery using AI directly in space, rather than beaming every raw image back to ground stations first
→ MOI-1A carries 117 trillion operations per second of onboard computing power and 2TB of storage, alongside a multispectral imaging system
→ EON Space Labs also had hardware on the same mission

The MOI-1A approach is the real story here. Satellite constellations generate far more image data than communication links can efficiently send back to Earth. Instead of transmitting everything and sorting it out later, this satellite identifies what's actually useful first — flagging relevant information in orbit and sending down only the results that matter. That cuts both bandwidth needs and response time for things like agriculture monitoring, mining, environmental tracking, and supply-chain intelligence.

It's also a signal about where India's space sector is heading. For years, Indian space startups mostly built and launched hardware. This mission shows companies moving into higher-value territory — sensing, onboard computing, and commercial data services — not just getting satellites into the sky, but making them smarter once they're there.

Four startups, one rocket, and a glimpse of what space infrastructure looks like when AI moves off the ground and into orbit with it.
