ED Attaches Rs 442 Crore More in Assets in the RummyCulture Money Laundering Case, Total Now Stands at Rs 2,843 Crore

The Enforcement Directorate has provisionally attached movable and immovable assets worth around Rs 442.35 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, in its ongoing investigation into Gameskraft Technologies and RummyTime Technologies, the companies behind the online rummy platform RummyCulture and related apps.

Here's what the latest attachment actually covers. The assets include balances in fixed deposits, commercial shops, a villa and multiple residential properties, all held in the names of family members, private family trusts and entities linked to shareholders of Gameskraft Technologies. With this fresh action, the total value of assets attached, frozen and seized across the investigation has reached approximately Rs 2,843 crore.

The case itself has been building for a while. The ED's probe covers real-money rummy games and tournaments operated through multiple brands, RummyCulture, RummyPrime, Playship and RummyTime, and the investigation began following several cheating-related FIRs registered in Telangana. Earlier in the case, the agency had already frozen movable assets worth around Rs 495 crore, seized Rs 11 lakh in cash along with gold and diamond jewellery including roughly 2.30 kg of bullion, and issued an attachment order covering properties worth about Rs 1,906 crore.

The alleged mechanics behind the money trail are worth noting too. According to the ED, proceeds from the gaming operations were routed to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks, and then reinvested into financial assets and properties in an attempt to present them as legitimate holdings. The agency has also flagged that the platforms, which reportedly had around three crore users across the country, spent close to Rs 1,035 crore on marketing and promotional campaigns to acquire and retain those users.

The reality check here is significant. This isn't a startup funding story, it's a live regulatory and legal action, and further investigation is still underway. For India's broader real-money gaming sector, already reshaped by last year's central legislation banning real-money games, this case is a reminder that regulatory scrutiny on the industry's past practices hasn't slowed down, even as the sector itself has been forced to pivot.

From dividends and buybacks to a Rs 2,843 crore asset trail, the RummyCulture case is turning into one of the most significant money laundering investigations to hit India's online gaming industry.
