ChatGPT Just Opened Its Own Virtual Fitting Room — And Quietly Closed It Again Days Later

OpenAI rolled out a Virtual Try-On feature inside ChatGPT on October 1, letting you see yourself wearing clothes before buying — and reports now indicate the feature has already been discontinued.

imageHere's how it was designed to work:

→ A "Try On" button appeared next to any clothing item in ChatGPT's shopping results — tap it, upload a selfie and a full-body photo, and ChatGPT generated an image of you wearing the piece
→ It wasn't limited to items ChatGPT itself surfaced. Any screenshot of clothing from anywhere on the web could be uploaded and tried on
→ The feature ran on ChatGPT Images 2.5, OpenAI's image model released September 8, which the company says improved lighting, fabric texture, and detail preservation
→ It shipped alongside a new Favorites library, where saved products and generated try-on images sat together for later browsing
→ OpenAI's own support page added a caveat: "check the merchant's measurements, product details, and return policy before buying" — because a photorealistic preview still can't tell you how something actually fits
→ By default, your uploaded reference photo was stored for future try-ons, and personal account images could be used for AI training unless you opted out

This wasn't ChatGPT's first swing at shopping, either. It follows OpenAI quietly shelving its earlier Instant Checkout experiment after it underperformed. Virtual Try-On was meant to go further — closing the gap between browsing and buying, competing directly with Google's own try-on tool from 2025.

Here's what stands out: a feature engineered around your face and body, stored by default and feeding into AI training unless you opt out, is exactly the kind of product that needs real-world testing before wide release — not just a flashy demo. Whether it was pulled for technical, legal, or image-quality reasons hasn't been confirmed, but the speed of the reversal says something about how fast AI companies are now shipping first and fixing later, especially with features built around personal photos.

Would you upload a full-body photo to an AI chatbot just to preview an outfit — or does that cross a line for you?
